The loss of Peter Sculthorpe in 2014 was a significant moment for Australian musicians. The composer who was synonymous with a true gritty sound of scorching earth and sun, as well as the call of the seagull was in many ways a father to us all. He made significant strides in taking our music and changing its geographical epicentre to South East Asia – a long way from the rolling green hills of England or the post modern struggles of mainland Europe and America. His gorgeous Lament, opening the concert today, is a great way for us to remember his laconic spirit and allows us to dip our toe into the deep waters of his imagination. And what a way to follow his great spirit than with Classical music’s greatest hit, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. No matter how many different versions we hear of this masterwork, how many TV shows bastardise it, how many different groups of people try to change and in some cases destroy it, the pure electricity that is at its heart is unending and unbeatable.
